Meanwhile

As noted in my previous post I’ll try to post more frequently. 


During a longer project I make other stuff to get a little variation and down time from the main project. It also helps when I'm stuck on some problem on the main project and during other activities I usually come up with some ideas/solutions.

Anyway I managed to upload my first 3D model on the Artstation marketplace. Nothing fancy but a big milestone for myself. It’s a container from my previous project(Anti Tank drone) - https://ragnarplinkner.artstation.com/projects/ako8X?album_id=772039

Decided to put it up for sale instead of it just sitting on my hard drive doing nothing. 


Meanwhile I also managed to make a grenade concept. I made a whole family. A high explosive (assault) grenade, fragmentation (defence) grenade, smoke grenade and an incendiary grenade.The modeling is almost done. Now I need some pretty renders of em. 

I also have a plan on modeling a carrying case for them and after that I will probably also upload them to the Artstation marketplace.


On other news the space freight ship project is coming along in my “unique” style(read SLOWLY). I need a little more detail work to complete the modeling part. After that texturing and rendering.

As the freight ship is slowly crawling nearer to the end I have already started to make preparations for my next project. I wanted to pick something super small for my next project but I also wanted something I can actually realize in a physical form. The fact that all the work I do only exists in a digital space and the result can be shown only on a screen is somehow stifling. So again, a big project. Nevertheless I'm optimistic about it because I also get to mess around with real hardware and that is always a treat.

It starts with an awesome and super prolific artist, a real sketchup wizard called 600v on deviantart or Rust Shake on Artstation. Check him out, he has a ton of absolutely wonderful work(more work on his deviant art site). The second I saw his two concepts for a table fan I wanted to make a real one on my desk. That was many many years ago but these concepts never left my brain and from time to time I have tried to come up with my own designs based on his ideas for not to be a complete ripoff. I really liked the “suicide” on/off switch on the 600v-s concept of the counter rotating fan :) but I have come up with a little safer switch placement. Anyway I have now blocked out two of my own concepts of the table fans. I decided that the best place for the switch is in the nose of the fan. This is also the place where you can adjust the fan blowing direction.

My idea with this project is to first make 3D models and renderings of them and after that make real prototypes. While modeling I have to keep in mind how to actually manufacture the things so this will probably also take YEARS :D ….hoping it won't but it’s hard changing one’s style :D


I also cobbled together a small moodboard for each concept. I know that the moodboard usually is done before the actual concepts but I already had the same ideas in mind while coming up with the initial concepts. I just realized them later for further development purposes. 

For the contra rotating fan I want to merge the legacy propeller design with the new fighter jet aesthetics.

For the jet version the first image that popped up in my head was the British Thrust supersonic car. Two big engines strapped together. Will see where it goes.

I will start with the contra rotating concept as this looks more appealing to me at the moment and poses a more difficult challenge in making the inner workings. I have to come up with a solution to make one propeller turn one way and the other turn the opposite way(I have a couple of ideas). I also need to start doing market research on drone propellers. I will probably have to 3D print them in the end because currently I have not decided on the scale of the fan so finding propellers with the dimensions I need could be hard. Furthermore if I'm not mistaken I will also need two propellers that are mirrored relative to each other. I have no idea if the propellers on sale also have an option to buy a mirrored counterpart. 

For starters I visited a local machine shop for some micro bearings that I will probably be using in the prototype.

So that is a brief overview of my doings so far.

Next post will hopefully be about the space freight progress :)


Sidenote.

I mentioned in my previous post that I have a full time job. That is not fully accurate. I'm actually working with a reduced time of 0.8 position. I'm super grateful that my employer was willing to make this working arrangement possible. Otherwise with my stellarly fast working style there would be 0 personal projects.
